I picked some huge pots out of my daughters trash the other day...we live next door and she had bought some really big trees at the nursery. Later discovered slugs in the bottom of them. That will teach me not to trash pick.

Someone told me that a shallow plate of beer would do the trick. All I have is a few drunk Japanese Beetles. I'm getting ready to go buy poison, but euuuu.

Any ideas?

Copper tubing is cheap at the building center... 10" of 1/2" dia "M" grade is like $6.00

Put the tubing on the surface of your soil around your raised bed, or whatever you are trying to protect...

Slugs won't cross it... why? copper tastes bad to them and they avoid it...

Do this test, be a slug... take out a copper penny.. taste it... you can tell right away it's copper...

do this and you shall frustrate your slugs and not have to poison the world :}

I live in the slug capital of the United States. Seriously, I do. Back in May I posted a blog entry entirely about how I manage slugs in my garden, organically, and successfully. Here's the link, you will find lots of things that work - and many that are all hype and little delivery.

Try this method...next time you peel a orange save the peel as much intact as you can . Slugs love the citrus and will flock to it. Simply put it out in early evening then the next morning when it is full of slugs dump the entire thing in soapy water. Viola..slug be gone.

That's a great idea. Since they are already in the area, I might try the Orange Peel method to draw them out, then put the tubing around. Sound like a plan?
Thanks Again

I have to draw the slugs out first, so I'll try this, then I'll try Fred's idea to keep em out. Great! Thanks

Those copper rings are a great idea too...especially for new plantings.

My hats are off to you veteran gardeners who can pick these guys up with your fingers. I can't even stand to look at them. But I'm coexisting with the garter snakes because you all encouraged me to. This morning on my way to work I took some pics of him and of my little garden. I hope i can get them uploaded tonight to share. I've not done that on this site yet. Is there a venue for that? Or must I host them elsewhere. I guess I can put them on my web server at work...as long as google doesn't find them, I'll be ok. LOL
I can just picture my boss finding pictures of my snake on her website, I could be toast. LOL

Anyway all, have a great day. I'm enjoying my new friends here. You are all great. Thanks

Trish, I am so glad that you are now tolerating the little snakes and can't wait to see your photo...

That's such great news... they do eat slugs by the way :} until they get overwhelmed by slug mucous that is...

I've sort of put stuff everywhere in my yard...much to the chagrin of my mother. She thinks I'm ruining everything by putting vegetables into my landscape. Obviously, I don't agree. :)

Here are my images
Little Lemon Tree. I've done everything to make this darn tree live for the last 7 years. Putting her outside in the warm weather is my last ditch effort.

This one's for you Fred...My little snake friend. Friend? Not sure how he feels about that.

Hope you enjoy the photos. Having trouble getting them all up. Says I have 5, there are only 4, oh well. Will try more later. I will be fun for me to keep a photo journal of my first year and compare to next year.
Have a good day everyone.
