Hello All,

I'm sending greetings from our community gardens program in Chatham-Kent. We have about 150 gardeners and are likely to add another 50 to 100 this year at 9 sites which may be 11 or 12 by the end of the season. We teach sustainable gardening methods including permaculture techniques. If you have questions about community gardening we will do our best to assist you with them.

We hope to benefit from the knowledge of the people who visit the board here and pass the information along to our gardeners.

You may find that there are enough to start a garden. We recommend 5 dedicated gardeners including one coordinator or 5 +1 A vacant lot can become a community garden, church lawn, school yard, any place free of toxcity. Some creativeness and resourcefullness can get you things like composted cattle manure for soil remediates and mulched trees for mulch. Some green houses will donate leftovers, seeds are inexpensive. If you can get together with a church you might be able to get some water out of them and a place to store tools or just use the roof and get together with a steward with some rain barrels. All you need is one working example and you're off. We started with one and now have 9 in 4 years and like I said are set to continue to expand. People are hungry if you teach them how to fish and provide the pond and rod, they will come and feed themselves, buidling community and empowering themselves at the same time.
