I can't believe my good fortune. While shopping for my son's beta for his birthday we came across an aquarium store that is sadly going out of business after more than 30 years. The owner was enthusiastic about helping us out and gave us a bunch of freebies and really cheap prices on some stuff.
I got a this guy:

65 gallon tank with gravel filtration system, light, stand, hood, pump, everything, for $100. I just about fell over myself. This was one of their first tanks and it was where they got new fish acclimated for the store. On top of this, we exchanged phone numbers and he wants to give us a bunch of other things once the store has finished out.
Talk about right place at the right time!
We are going to work on getting an aquaculture system built this winter so we can get some fish going in the spring. I'm very excited about this, the prospects of what we can do and I will finally get my hydroponic system I've been dying to build but just couldn't justify the nutrient costs. Woohoo!
