View Full Version : Compost never finishes...

I'm good at composting. When I do it. The bin heats up fast and stays hot the right amount of time. I continue to add to it throughout the growing season, turning it as I add. However, I pretty much let it go cold during the late fall and winter. All I have at that point are kitchen scraps and it's so wet/cold I don't want to be out there any longer than necessary.

That backround said, my compost never really forms that loamy rich dirt-like texture that is so common in composting videos (including Patti's). Mine is normally bark-brown with short twigs and leaves throughout.

Am I just not letting it compost enough or do you need to strain it to get the desired results?

Not that I mind a few twigs when I augment my garden. They'll break down eventually, but if I can improve my compost, I'm all for it.

Thanks!
