I suppose the answer to that depends upon what gardening zone you are in. I'm not familiar with gardening zones in the UK, or how cold it gets there in the winter.

With the right set up you can grow anything in doors during the winter. Were you planning on growing it inside or outside?

Since I am not familar with the UK zones, let us know what your daily low temperatures and daily high temperatures are during the time you will be growing. This way we can recommend suitable plants.

I think Kale would be safe, if it is covered in a hoop house. Kale grows very well in cold climates. What is you average temp in Farenheight now and in January. That would really help.

Eco, the UK and maritime PNW (Seattle) have very similar climates. If you are near the coast you can grow any cool weather crop under a simple hoop cover. Check out my blog for more info. Of course you can't grow much from here on out, but you could harvest all winter what you started in late summer/early fall. Don't, worry, I just learned that lesson a season late myself. Good luck!

Eco, you should get a hold of Eliot Coleman's book Four Season Gardening. It is really good and will open a whole new world up for you, like it did for me:

I'm reading Four Season Harvest right now. Just remember, it's for Maine and France, not so much the UK. Where they need coldframes, we can get by with hoop covers. But I agree with the check the lattitudes. And there is good stuff in the book none-the-less.
Now that I'm home I can pass along a blog I like to visit. Rob is in the UK and I like to see what he's doing and compare it to me in Seattle. Enjoy.
