So I got all excited about my zucchini and cucumber seedlings and went out to put them in, only to realize that I don't know how far apart to plant them when growing them up a trellis. Is there a general rule here? I know that one plant can often take over a whole 4x4 bed or more when growing over the ground, but what about when it's going up? And how far away should other plants be from them?

I plant mine 2 per SF when trellising them. They all grow together but who cares.

For trellis plants I space about 6" apart. Zucchini is not a trellis plant and will need 3 sq ft of space when fully mature. You can plant lots of things that can be harvested in the space around the zucchini and harvest them before it takes over. I plant things such as lettuce, radish etc in that space. By the time the zucchini is fully grown, you will have plenty to eat. Kim

Make sure that where ever you are installing the trellis that it won't cast a shadow on the rest of your plantings.
